Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico launches Educate en casa

(San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 3, 2020) The non-profit organization Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico (BGCPR), has found on digital platforms an alternative to reinforce education and close the educational gap caused by schools closing and social distancing in the face of the health emergency caused by Coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Just as we did during the emergencies that Puerto Rico faced in the past two years, we continue to look for different and creative ways to better serve those who need us most,” said BGCPR President, Olga Ramos Carrasquillo.

After the government of Puerto Rico issued the executive order mandating the closure of shops, schools and public meeting spaces, the 11 BGCPR Clubs paused their direct services. However, Club and administrative staff continue to work remotely to continue providing support and resources to children, youth and their families during this crisis.

“COVID-19 has failed to stop our mission. Through Educate en casa, located within our website, people can access virtual educational, recreational and free content, to continue learning and having fun during this period, ”added Ramos Carrasquillo.

Those interested can access bgcpr.org/educateencasa where they will find resources for education, entertainment, art and physical activity. The BGCPR recreation and social program coordinators also provide resources focused on disease prevention, stress management, and managing family finances during an emergency. Since the direct service started today, BGCPR has served 200 participants daily, through their parents. This translates into 113 contact hours in educational and postgraduate services, over 12 contact hours in emotional support and 11 contact hours in other services.

Mrs. Ramos Carrasquillo explained that the Clubs “contact through the phone / cell phones and chats with the fathers, mothers and caregivers of our participants. 83% of this population has internet access and calls through cell phones, with very limited connectivity due to the realities in which they live. ”
