“In my community, young people often do not find spaces where they can grow and share with ease and security. For this reason, a vision I have is to provide access to other young people like me, so that they can develop and get the same opportunities I had at the Club,” says Kevin J. Rosario, the new Las Margaritas Club Youth of the Year.

Among these opportunities, Kevin highlights his development in basketball, a sport that helped him gain discipline and be more responsible with his time, his homework and his academic work. “I’ve witnessed how Las Margaritas teammates have come through because of their talents in sports, their dedication and commitment,” says the student of Rafael Cordero where he is part of the accounting program.

At the Club, Kevin has also head the Keystone youth leadership group, for which he has carried out community impact projects. “In the future, I not only envision myself as a professional athlete and CPA, but also working to leave a legacy in the community. I believe in spaces where children can develop in an integrated way so that they can move away from danger,” reveals that he also envisions to study criminology.

What obstacle or challenge have you experienced?

“The separation from my mother by the Department of Family and Protective Services on an account of a confusing accident in my house with my younger brother, which they wrongly associated with abuse. After two months of separation and court proceedings, they concluded that it was an accident and we were reunited. But, at the age of nine it was a hard period because I thought I would never see my mother and brother again. This made me reflect on how life can change in any moment, and that there are things that we cannot control or change, but we can still remain hopeful.

What characteristics a leader must have?

“Instead of being imposing, a leader should be inclusive, give the team space to develop their strengths, and consider the opinion of others. A leader listens, supports and shows interest in doing teamwork”.
