Because the only job of Carmina (and all the children in the world) is to play and learn.<\/p>\n

But our real world is very different. Every day, millions of children suffer the heartbreaking consequences of wars, social injustices, and all kinds of abuses.<\/p>\n

Puerto Rico is no exception. Year after year, statistics about our economy show that over 50% of Puerto Rican children live in far-from-ideal conditions. Poverty has a female face, affecting 70% of single mothers with children under 17. This isn’t about who is in worse conditions or who lives in houses with dirt floors. Anywhere there’s even one child who has to drink water to “trick the stomach” and go to bed without eating, there is poverty.<\/p>\n

Regardless of numbers or appearances, poverty is defined as the lack of resources to cover basic expenses, including housing, food, health, and education. Those who study poverty attribute it to wars, lack of opportunities, or colonial political situations.<\/p>\n

But as is our custom at Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico, rather than talking about statistics or causes, we want to talk about solutions.<\/p>\n

We bet on the education of our children because, just as there are statistics describing poverty, census data shows that higher education levels correlate with lower poverty levels. Education doesn’t guarantee wealth, but lacking education guarantees that accessing better opportunities will be much more difficult.<\/p>\n

Recognizing that reading is the foundation for any profession or for learning other skills, one of the main focuses of our educational program is to improve language skills. All this is combined with a variety of services to develop leadership, overcome adverse situations, and maintain healthy lifestyles.<\/p>\n

Our goal is for our children to perform better academically, finish high school, continue to some form of post-secondary education, and have the necessary skills to navigate the world around them, with sufficient income for a dignified life.<\/p>\n

We’re here so that all Carminas (and all our children) can walk barefoot on the grass without worries.<\/p>\n

En un mundo ideal, todas las Carminas correr\u00edan descalzas por la grama y jugar\u00edan con sus mu\u00f1ecas, sin m\u00e1s preocupaci\u00f3n que peinar sus cabellos o cambiar sus vestidos. Porque el \u00fanico trabajo de Carmina (y de todos los ni\u00f1os del mundo) es jugar y aprender.<\/p>\n

Pero nuestro mundo real es muy diferente. Todos los d\u00edas, millones de ni\u00f1os sufren las consecuencias desgarradoras de las guerras, de las injusticias sociales y de todo tipo de abusos.<\/p>\n

Puerto Rico no es la excepci\u00f3n. A\u00f1o tras a\u00f1o, las estad\u00edsticas sobre el estatus de nuestra econom\u00eda muestran que m\u00e1s del 50% de los ni\u00f1os puertorrique\u00f1os viven en condiciones mucho menos que ideales. M\u00e1s a\u00fan, la pobreza tiene rostro de mujer, afectando al 70% de las madres solteras con hijos menores de 17 a\u00f1os. Aqu\u00ed no se trata de qui\u00e9n est\u00e1 en peores condiciones o qui\u00e9n vive en casas con pisos de tierra. En cualquier lugar en donde haya un solo ni\u00f1o que tenga que tomar agua para \u201cenga\u00f1ar al est\u00f3mago\u201d y acostarse sin comer, hay pobreza.<\/p>\n

Independientemente de los n\u00fameros o de las apariencias, la pobreza se define como la falta de recursos para cubrir los gastos b\u00e1sicos, entre ellos vivienda, alimentos, salud y educaci\u00f3n. Las personas que estudian la pobreza la atribuyen a las guerras, a la falta de oportunidades o a las situaciones pol\u00edticas coloniales.<\/p>\n

Pero como es nuestra costumbre, en Boys & Girls Clubs de Puerto Rico, m\u00e1s que hablar de estad\u00edsticas o de las causas, queremos hablar de soluciones.<\/p>\n

Apostamos a la educaci\u00f3n de nuestros ni\u00f1os porque seg\u00fan hay estad\u00edsticas que describen la pobreza, los datos del censo demuestran que, a mayor nivel de educaci\u00f3n, menor el nivel de pobreza. La educaci\u00f3n no garantiza riqueza, pero no tener educaci\u00f3n garantiza que ser\u00e1 much\u00edsimo m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil el acceso a mejores oportunidades.<\/p>\n

Reconociendo que la lectura es la base para cualquier profesi\u00f3n o para aprender otras destrezas, uno de los mayores enfoques de nuestro programa educativo es mejorar las destrezas de lenguaje. Todo esto en conjunto con una variedad de servicios para desarrollar liderazgo, superar situaciones adversas y mantener estilos de vida saludables.<\/p>\n

Nuestra meta es que nuestros ni\u00f1os tengan una mejor ejecutoria acad\u00e9mica, terminen la escuela superior, contin\u00faen hacia alg\u00fan tipo de educaci\u00f3n postsecundaria y tengan las destrezas necesarias para desenvolverse en el mundo que les rodea, con ingresos suficientes para una vida digna.<\/p>\n

Estamos aqu\u00ed para que todas las Carminas (y todos nuestros ni\u00f1os) puedan caminar sin preocupaciones descalzos sobre la grama.<\/p>\n
