Violence among young people does not hap-pen without cause. Often, behind every aggressive act lies a silent cry for help—a story of lone-liness, lack of support, and the absence of safe spaces to grow. For us, caring for the emotional well-being of children and youth is not optional; it is the foundation for building a life of pur-pose and a future free from violence.

Through our work, we see that emotional health is what empowers young people to identify their emotions, manage anger and frustration, build relationships based on respect, and make safe, positive decisions. Without the right support at home, at school, or in the community, that inner pain can turn into withdrawal, aggression, or high-risk behaviors that are often left unno-ticed until it is too late.

That is why BGCPR has developed programs that address these challenges directly. Our AWARE program, implemented in public schools in San Juan, Arecibo, Bayamón, and San Lorenzo, equips students with socio-emotional skills, promotes mental well-being, and helps prevent risky situations before they escalate. Likewise, our Intervention, Diversion, and Education Pro-gram (IDEPR)—currently serving Arecibo and the Luis Llorens Torres community—offers direct intervention in cases of violence and trauma. With specialized teams trained even in psycholog-ical first aid, we provide immediate, sensitive, and professional support for youth and families during critical moments.

We also recognize that the family environment is essential. That is why our initiatives include guidance for parents and caregivers, promoting positive parenting practices and emotional vali-dation. Adolescents may seek independence, but they still need adults who are present, who listen, and who set loving and clear boundaries.

In our Clubs, young people find more than tutoring or workshops. They discover safe spaces to express themselves without judgment, access to professional guidance, and opportunities to build strong and healthy relationships. Yet, we know our efforts cannot stand alone. Preventing violence requires a broader commitment—a community-wide network that brings together families, schools, organizations, and neighborhoods.

We must collectively prioritize emotional intelligence in education, strengthen support systems, expand access to mental health services, and work to end the normalization of harmful behav-iors.

At BGCPR, we remain committed to building a safer and more hopeful Puerto Rico. Together, we can ensure that every child, teenager, and young adult can grow with dignity, purpose, and without fear.

Join us in this mission. Together, we can transform lives and prevent violence before it begins.

By Zayra Cintrón, LCsW
Social Pillar Manager, BGCPR[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”46696″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Emotional Health and the Prevention of Youth Violence” font_container=”tag:h1|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes” css=””][vc_column_text css=””]At Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico (BGCPR), we believe that preventing youth violence begins with safeguarding emotional and mental health.
